Today’s post is a bit of a light-hearted break from all the intense and/or very academic posts I’ve been writing recently, but the points I’m making are still valid. Sure, if I’d wanted to convey that impression more effectively then probably I should have used a different title instead, but then I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t usually choose them with SEO in mind (Search Engine Optimization to non-bloggers).

In many ways, blogs are like bars, for patrons of both may reveal many secrets to the hosts that they may not be aware of. The following doesn’t apply to wordpress.com blogs like this one because they don’t allow javascript, but most other blogging platforms like blogger.com and self-hosted blogs do, which means that their statistics programs like Statcounter and Sitemeter tell them:

• What website every visitor was at before coming to the blog
• What posts they read on the blog and for how long
• Every single link they clicked on, and how for long and how many times they watched videos and so forth
• What website they visited next
• Roughly whereabouts they live
